While leaving
the city for the suburbs can feel daunting, more and more brands are catering
to recent transplants—and, no doubt, seeing those urban comforts pop up in your
new town can make the transition that much easier. From the hottest fitness studios
that, now, call the ‘burbs “home” to your kids’ favorite drop-in classes to,
even, NYC chefs opening crave-worthy outposts outside of city limits, there’s
lots of familiar finds that, like you, are making the move right along side of
you.
Last week we talked about the fitness trends that,
like you, decided to call the ‘burbs “home.” This week it’s all about the great
eats that, now, you can readily find in virtually every corner of Westchester,
Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. Sure, NYC has never had a total
monopoly on the best food and restaurants but, lately, more and more city-based
chefs are packing up their knives and opening popular outposts outside of the
boroughs. That means you don’t have to say goodbye to the likes of X, X and X
when you move—you’ll just have an excuse to eat at their restaurants twice as much!
Here’s what got our attention:
Geoffrey
Zakarian // The National // Greenwich
The popular Midtown eatery is opening in
Greenwich this fall. Why? Because The National’s celebrity chef owner Geoffrey
Zakarian lived in the posh ‘burb for years, and loves the community. Chef
Zakarian envisions the new restaurant as a “busting neighborhood café where you
could stop in for a proper cocktail and a delicious meal.” Yum!
P.J.
Clarke’s // Woodbury
The 130-year-old Manhattan staple got a
suburban makeover this December, when it opens its first Long Island outpost in
Woodbury, NY. This iconic eatery has a famed history, for sure—Frank Sinatra
had a go-to table, and countless songs, novels and campaigns were penned at its
tables. On game days and weekend nights the bar is almost always packed, so get
there early if you want to indulge in their classically cool cocktails and
unbeatable burgers.
Jean-Georges
Vongerichten // The Inn at Pound Ridge // Pound Ridge
The prolific Jean-Georges hasn’t ignored the
suburbs! The Inn at Pound Ridge by
Jean-Georges is a popular go-to for residents and visitors, and it’s not
hard to see why. A delicious, inspired farm-to-table menu is served up in a 19th-century
Hudson Valley inn. Choose from some classic favorites, including pizzas,
pastas, steaks and chops, plus unique new twists created by chef himself for
this must-try restaurant.
Michael
Psilakis // MP Taverna // Roslyn
Chances are, you recognize Chef Michael Psilakis from Food Network—or, even, from his
countless call-outs in Bon Appetit
(he was their chef of the year in 2008), Food
& Wine and more. MP Taverna is Chef Psilakis’ modern interpretation of
Greek tavern cuisine, joining Manhattan sister spots Kefi and FishTag.
Michael
White // Osteria Morini // Bernardsville
The James Beard Award-winning chef behind Michelin
Star-rated Marea, Ai Fiori and more opened his first New Jersey restaurant—and
this one’s a reinvention of an already popular Soho hotspot. Osteria
Morini opened a second restaurant in Bernardsville, NJ, and this one’s as
good as the original. The food is fresh, delicious and a perfect combination of
traditional and reinvented Emilia-Romagna cuisine.
Cheers!
